mexico lindo y quierido: celebrating the bicentennial of mexican independence
Americans commonly mistake Cinco de Mayo, the day that commemorates the Mexican Victory over the French in Puebla (1862), for Mexican Independence day (1810). Cinco de Mayo has become an American holiday synonymous with Mariachis, Margaritas, Corona beer and Americanized Mexican food like jalapeño studded nachos and cheese smothered burritos.
However, real Mexican Independence Celebrations in Mexico happen in September, el mes de la patria. The celebrations begin on September 15th the night of El Grito de la Independencia, when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Roman Catholic priest from the small town near Guanajuato, called for revolt and incited over a decade of war that would eventually lead to Mexico’s freedom (1821) . This year also celebrates 100 years since its Revolution which began in 1910 and brought down dictator Porfirio Diaz.
So join us this month as we celebrate the bicentennial by cooking traditional dishes from the many regions of Mexico including Chiles en Nogadas, Pepián con Pollo and Chileatole Verde.
Even in the streets of East Harlem, NYC the Mexican Flag hangs high. Mexicanos will be thinking of their beloved patria and the sound of the cry:
¡Vivan los heroes que nos dieron patria! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Hidalgo! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Morelos! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Allende! ¡Viva!
¡Vivan Aldama y Matamoros! ¡Viva!
¡Viva nuestra independencia! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Mexico! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Mexico! ¡Viva!
¡Viva Mexico! ¡Viva!

Craving some Chiles en Nogada now! My husband’s tias in Mexico City always make them and get together to eat them. Last time we went they had frozen a few for us..it was 3 months later, but they still tasted delicious. The only ingredient missing was the granada.
Looking forward to your recipes this month!
I would love to feature your article on my blog September 16th. I wanted to post the SAME thing, but your version is nice and simple
Mine, on the other-hand was way too wordy
Would you be okay with me posting it? Let me know.
Gracias!
Yvette

Viva Mexico!! I’m sure you’re going to whip up quite the bash to celebrate.
A huge bash indeed, I have narrowed my menu down to seven dishes. I’m prepping for it already!!!!
As September 16 draws closer, I am anticipating a big plate of chiles en nogada, one of my favorite Mexican dishes. This is the month to celebrate Mexico.
